The owner had originally invited us to provide advice about how to best to convert an existing building, with a pre-existing planning permit, into a rehabilitation facility for thoroughbred racehorses.

We took a leap and redesigned the layout utilising many subtle but game-changing features, working within the shed envelope. This inspired the client to allow us to manage the remaining stages of the project.

The trusting client-architect relationship encouraged the implementation of many pioneering features and innovative design details that maximised safety, durability and low maintenance into an elegant resolution.

The project’s focus on rehabilitation guided a design that developed into a safe, restful stable environment with ample space, ventilation and views to the outside for the convalescing horses. This was optimised while being practical, flexible and secure.

The project also included a studio for overnight stays and amenities and equipment for visiting veterinarians.

“Even when it is over 30 degrees outside, the stabling environment is cool and comfortable for the horses. This is due to the designers’ knowledge of materials, ventilation and siting.

The building captures the breeze and fresh air but still provides protection from prevailing winds. It has sunlight in abundance but does not overheat.

The detailing of the complex is of the very highest standards. Equitecture’s safety standards and unique systems optimise flexibility and practicality and reflect their consideration for both the horses and the people who use the complex. The multi-leafed shutter to each stable and specially developed walling system are examples of this.”
